Holiday Tips to keeping your pets safe this season courtesy of the Ottawa Humane Society. The holidays are a fun and festive time for everyone – pets included! Here are a few easy tips to follow to ensure your animal friends stay safe this season.
With the first true hit of summer and extreme humidity levels that are expected to hit this week (August 10-16), please do not leave your pets in your car. According to the Ottawa Humane Society the temperature inside a parked car can surpass 40°C in mere minutes. Yes minutes. So if you think you are going to be quick by running into the store to just buy something think again. Your pet could suffer severe brain damage or even death. In our opinion it's never a good idea to leave your pet alone in your car. Even when the weather is considered acceptable its always a good habit to leave your pet at home or in the car with the AC on. If you see an animal that needs to be rescued, don't waste another minute and immediately call the Ottawa Humane Society at 613-725-1532

Did you know that the Ottawa Humane Society Shelter on Champagne Avenue (just off Carling Ave) was built in 1968. Since that time the population of Ottawa has doubled while the number of animals the OHS treats has more than quadrupled. That's incredible. I'm sure you can only imagine the stress on the animals and the wonderful people who care for these animals has put on them. Each year they struggle to care for more than 11,000 animals in a shelter that is only designed to accommodate 2,500 a year. I don't know how they've done it all these years but they can't keep going this way. The need for a new home is clear and we can all help. Their goal is to raise $9.5 million to build a very much needed state of the art facility. They are currently at 75% of their goal and only need 25% more to reach their goal. Please, please consider helping the OHS to reach their goal. All it takes is a small contribution from everyone in our community to make a BIG difference. For more information please visit
'UNTIL THERE'S NONE, RESCUE ONE' The Canine Rescue Team is holding their First Annual 'WAG N' QUE' Dog Day at the Park Event on Saturday June 20, 2009 starting at 8 am at Tanglewood Park - 31 Woodfield Drive, Ottawa. Clean out your clutter and help save a dogs life by participating in the Community Garage Sale, Artisan/Craft Sale, BBQ Lunch and Dog Grooming & Nail Clip. The Canine Rescue Team is a non-profit organization founded by Cheryl O'Grady in the late summer of 2008 and operates with the asssitance of a volunteer team comprised of individuals who are looking to make a difference in the lives of abandoned and abused dogs in the Ottawa and surrounding regions. Our mandate is to bring into the rescue dogs of all breeds, ages and needs and provide them with a safe foster home. All the dogs receive whatever vetting they require, as much food as they can eat and all the love they deserve with the eventual goal of being adopted to their forever homes - free of neglect, abuse, pain or suffering. Shelters are faced with an overwhelming amount of dogs every day and rely on the CRT to help save lives, rather than euthanize. When the shelters call the Canine Rescue Team, every second counts and that means constant fundraising and support from the community to help rescue more and more dogs in need. For more information or to schedule an interview with Cheryl O'Grady and her rescue dogs, please contact Laurie Hamelin at 613 - 680 - 4939 or e mail Laurie at lauriegailhamelin@gmail.com.

The reality is the impact of the current financial climate is also impacting our local animal shelter. The Ottawa Humane Society has already felt the repercussions of the economy and with the latest news that the Community Foundation of Ottawa will suspend grants in 2009 is devastating. For the past eight years, the OHS has been the recipient of Community Foundation grants and has depended on that to help with some of their community programs. The winter season is one of the OHS busiest times of the year and they are always over crowded with animals that need medical care and eventually good and loving homes. Despite what happens in the economy the dedication and commitment of the OHS must go on. The help they receive from our community and from supporters like you go a long way to help them rescue and heal animals from abuse and neglect, and in turn find them new and loving homes. This Christmas please consider helping the Ottawa Humane Society by making a contribution. For more information please contact the OHS
The OHS has a lot to celebrate with new animal cruelty legislation that was passed in the Ontario legislature on Nov. 17. Bill 50, the Provincial Animal Welfare Act, ensures that people who abuse animals will face jail, stiffer fines and a lifetime ban on animal ownership. It is also important to note that the OHS is legally mandated to enforce federal and provincial animal cruelty provisions, however, they do not receive any government funding to perform this work. That's why community support is so important to the OHS! Please continue to support the OHS in any way that you can so that can continue doing the excellent work they do. For more information on the bill please visit Bill 50

The 20th annual Wiggle Waggle Walkathon was a huge SUCCESS!! Our community helped raised over $148,000 for the animals, that's over $12,000 MORE than last year! This was truly an amazing event with a fantastic turnout that brought out over 1500 participants, their friends, family and of course, their dogs. Simply4Paws helped raised over $200 in our online donations, tickets sales for the gift basket that was featured at the event and 5% of all our sales made that day went directly to the OHS. The owner Diana Davies-Harju also volunteered her personal time to help out with the event. The winner for the gift basket was the Robertson family and their beautiful, sweet black lab. Serious health risks that have been linked to the exposure of pesticides and there is even more concern on the long term effects of it. Did you know that Canada is one of the only developed countries without an environmental health strategy. Dr. David Suzuki along with Ambassador of Sweden to Canada, Ingrid Iremark, and Canadian environmental health physician, Dr. Lynn Marshall will discuss how Canada can develop a national strategy to protect both the health of Canadians and the nation’s extraordinary natural assets. We can certainly learn from Sweden, who has some of the strongest laws in place to protect the health of its citizens from environmental contaminants. The public forum will also coincide with the release of a groundbreaking report from the David Suzuki Foundation that outlines how Canada can help protect against the adverse health effects of environmental hazards. Seating is limited so be sure to arrive early.

On July 21, 2007 the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) presented the new Canadian certified organic logo at the Barrie Farmer’s Market. As outlined in the “Organic Products Regulations” issued by the Federal Government in December of 2006 this new logo will provide assurance to consumers that they are purchasing organic products that have met the Federal Governments strict Organic Standards. The logo will only be permitted on those products that actually meet the strict Canadian organic standards. Similar to the USDA Organic Standards Canada’s certified organic products must contain at least 95% of organic ingredients in order to use the seal. Any current products claiming to be organic will have to meet these standards and will have up until December 2008 to phase that in. After that point it will be mandatory that all organic products be certified. For more information:
